Thinking about student learning outcomes, those results, and discussing them with colleagues are a key part of professional development in one's discipline. Carefully reflecting on the expectations of what students should achieve, what skills they should develop, and what knowledge they should have is at the heart of continuing to develop as an instructor and as a member of one's discipline. This Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is a classroom-based inquiry into subject matter teaching and learning conducted by discipline faculty.
Moreover, there are relatively easy and straightforward ways to take advantage of the process of developing, implementing, assessing, and continuing to revise the SLO assessment process within your curricular area in order to advance in your profession and as an educator at LBCC.
The assessment of SLO process very easily lends itself to exploring and comparing the utility of different pedagogical approaches over time. Most disciplines have key organizations or programs within organizations at national, regional, and sometimes even local levels that are dedicated to understanding and ultimately improving instruction and student learning within the discipline. As such, they organize stand-alone conferences and instruction-related symposia at national and regional conferences as well as focused publications.
What follows below is a partial and growing list, organized by discipline, of professional opportunities virtually just waiting for you to take advantage of. Click on any link to display that information.
The subcommittee is interested in the further development of these resources. Please contact a member with information about your subject area's opportunities.
