Outcomes Assessment
Course Level

All course outlines must have SLOs identified and differentiated from the learning objectives. This process began late in the spring 2009 term. It is continuing now and is the first step in the Outcomes Assessment Process. Please make sure that all of your course outlines currently reflect this requirement. If not, then address this through the submission of the worksheet below.

Alert All courses must establish an assessment plan that is ongoing and systematic. This process began in the summer of 2009. It is continuing now and is a crucial and necessary step in the Outcomes Assessment Process. Please make sure that all of your courses currently reflect this requirement. If not, then address this through the submission of an Outcomes Assessment Plan. Training information and templates are provided below.

Provided here is a course SLO assessment plan template specifically for courses that include prompts to assist faculty in developing Course Level Outcomes Assessment Plans that meet the necessary good practices. Following that is an informational document on the development of a course SLO assessment plan in preparation for actual assessment implementation (first three columns of the Course Assessment Plan Template).

Course Outcomes Assessment and Routine Course Review

Faculty have participated in Routine Course Review of the course outlines of record annually. The Outcomes Assessment Process for courses is an extension of the professional work that has been done regularly. The Outcomes Assessment Process should be meaningful, measureable, and manageable. Keep this in mind as you develop assessment plans, compile evidence, and build on existing efforts to improve student learning.

Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes for courses will follow the existing Routine Course Review 6-year cycle. All department heads rebalanced the adopted courses within this cycle for the years 2010-15. That information is provided here for planning purposes. This means that when a course is due for its routine course review its course assessment plan should be completed and re-evaluation plan for the next on-going cycle will commence and be documented in the Program Plan section of TracDat.

(The information in these documents were compiled on September 30, 2009.)

Course Outcomes Assessment Process

Course level Student Learning Outcome (SLO) Assessment refers to a process where student learning is defined for a course and assessment methods are used by a faculty member to generate and collect information for evaluation of courses with the ultimate purpose of evaluating overall educational quality and improving student learning.

The Outcomes Assessment Process is a significant component of Program Review. Please refer to the "General to the College, Program Review section" for that specific information. Currently a paper document (Outcomes Assessment Plan) will be used until TracDat, the college's program plan database, is functional. Please refer to the "General to the College, Assessment Plan section" for that specific information and worksheet.

Examples of Course Level Assessment Plans

The intent of the Outcomes Assessment Plan is to provide adequate latitude for the variety of subjects offered within basic parameters of good practice. With that in mind, below are some examples.

Syllabus

The Course Syllabus is the basis for a common understanding between the instructor and student. It should include Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) as these are a succinct manner to communicate the expected learning for the course and is a best practice expected at this College.

The Curriculum Committee unanimously passed a motion on September 16, 2009 that endorses such a practice, "Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) on the course outlines of record be placed on all faculty syllabi to inform students of that course's expected learning."

The LBCC Faculty Handbook provides direction by citing SLOs as an inclusion on course syllabi.

The Assessment of Student Learning Outcomes Subcommittee provides an overview about the purpose, expectations, and benefits of having SLOs on course syllabi and the various means in which this can be accomplished.
